Bono the Wordsmith

Politics aside, you can't help but be humbled by Bono's utter mastery of the English language as evidenced in this press conference.

I'm particularly impressed by his use of the words "obfuscation" and "burobabble." I mean, c'mon, "obfuscation" was probably most recently used by puritanical clergy during the Salem Witch Trials and "burobabble" isn't even a word... it is in fact, for lack of a better word, burobabble. Seriously, this gets my vote for the W-T-F word creation of the millennium.

Yayyy Baseball!

I'm actually leaving work early today. And before you question, why then, would I be wasting time creating a blog post if I'm already working an abbreviated day, let me explain... I have two thumbs and I don't give a crap.

I'm leaving early so I can get down to Our Nation's Capitol for the Pirates' first appearance in Washington this season. See, I'm proud to admit that, despite my expatriation from the Pittsburgh area, I have committed myself to support the Pirates no matter where I may live; which is why when I lived in Chicago, and now that I live in Baltimore, I have made a point to attend at least one game of every series that the Pirates are in town. The team may not be aware of this (and judging by their performance in most of these games, they are not), but I feel it's important.

As I mentioned, the Pirates have disappointed me in many of these games. I've been heckled in the bleachers at Wrigley and the 300 level at RFK for wearing that big, gold P proudly on my forehead, but I won't give up on them. I can't give up on them. I guess I just wanted to make them aware that there are people like me out there.

Some day the players on this team will realize that just because they're not on the Yankees or Red Sox, if they put a consistently good product on the field, "they" will come. If you need proof, just look at the attendance records of the Pirates in the late 80s and early 90s and their consistent sell-outs of Three Rivers Stadium. It shouldn't take a super-spectacular fireworks show/rock concert to sell out PNC Park on a Saturday night (although those shows are super-spectacular -- saw one last year).

Having the worst home record in baseball doesn't put asses in the seats, boys.

Hopefully, tonight, they can get a win and make it seem like not such a bad idea to drive 60 miles, through Baltimore and DC beltway traffic(s), and be up until at least midnight on a work night... here's to hope!
